My engagement ring was so much more than I ever could have dreamt of. Every time I look at it, my breath gets taken away a little bit. My fiancé was so amazing and thoughtful when he chose this ring and I wanted to be able to do the same for him. So a few weeks before our wedding, when we were getting ready to go look at wedding bands, I asked him if he would trust me to pick them out for us. He laughed and said if he couldn’t trust me then why would he be marrying me? I kissed him goodbye and went down to our jewelry store.

I felt a little bad for the sales associate because I was so particular in what I was looking for. I probably made him pull about three dozen sets of diamond wedding bands out from the case. We even looked at some anniversary bands so I could find the right one. But when I saw the one pair that was perfect, it was all worth it. The bands themselves were made from platinum, which was great because it matched perfectly with my engagement ring and was also “manly” enough that I knew how good it would look on my fiancé’s finger. Just as importantly, the diamonds were set into the band itself so there were no raised edges. He works with his hands and if the setting of the diamonds was too high, he might end up getting the ring caught and losing some of the stones.

When I came home, he asked how the shopping had been. I just smiled coyly and refused to show him what I had found. In fact, I gave my diamond engagement ring to his best man so that he won’t get a chance to see it until he slips it on my finger. It was Half Moon Bay, circa summer, 2006. The late summer sun beat down on Northern California like some tyrannical overlord. It was confusing for locals and tourists alike.
